Writing Update – November

The Soldier and the Slave

I’m happy with the initial interest in The Soldier and the Slave, and it continues to do well in the Kindle version (less so with the print version).

My current Kindle Select contract is up on January 6th, and I’m considering whether or not I should leave it in the program or release it more widely. As of today, I have more reads through the Kindle Unlimited program than I have sold copies of the book, and my royalties for each copy read is actually higher than what I make on a sale. So, from a financial perspective, it’s to my benefit to keep the book in the Kindle Select program.

However, I do know that having my book out on multiple platforms will increase discoverability, which is really what I’m after at this point. So I have to consider the pros and cons of each approach and decide my course of action based on that. For now, The Soldier and the Slave is in the program at least until early January.

The Traitor and the Thief

I’m continuing to work on this book, and the manuscript is proceeding well. I’m still on track to have the manuscript completed by the end of the calendar year, but this may extend into the first couple of weeks of January depending on how the month of December goes. My life outside of writing is quite busy right now, and I’m not getting as much time to write as I’d like.

I’ll keep everyone in the loop in December’s writing update.

The Revenant and the Reaper

Nothing new to report here. I’m focusing on The Traitor and the Thief right now.

Short Stories

My Hallowe’en story was well-received, and I’m happy it gave a few people the creeps as befitting the season.

This month’s story is one of which I’m particularly proud. It’s an Undying Empire story entitled Snowfall, and gives a glimpse into another aspect of life in the Empire and the creatures running around outside the cities.

This story was originally written some time ago, and I intended it to be connected to the events in The Witch’s Path. But that novel was altered while I was developing it, and so became something different from what I had originally envisioned. So this story has some familiar elements to it, but is its own thing.

Tales of the Undying Empire

The first three novels in the Tales of the Undying Empire series are no longer in the Kindle Select program. I’m working on getting them back up on the other distribution platforms, such as Kobo, iBooks, etc. though this will take a bit of time as I’m focused on getting The Traitor and the Thief completed.

I will announce it on this blog when those three novels are available on platforms other than Amazon (though they will remain for sale on Amazon as well, of course).

The omnibus edition of Tales of the Undying Empire is, unfortunately, delayed. I’m trying to get it out as quickly as possible, but there were some production issues that I have to address to ensure it’s a good product when it’s released.

I’m not going to give another release date here just yet, as I hate to announce a date and then miss it. So I’ll keep you updated on this blog. I’m hoping to address the issues and have it up for sale soon. However, my priority is to work on The Traitor and the Thief when I have a good chunk of writing time, and that means this is being worked on in bits and pieces.

That’s it for this month. Look for Snowfall here next week.

Book Launch Update

We’re down to the last couple of days before The Soldier and the Slave goes live on Amazon!

I want to give a hearty thanks to all the people who entered the Goodreads Giveaway, and of course those who’ve added it to their “to read” list on Goodreads. I’ve shipped the autographed copies of the novel to the five winners, and I hope they enjoy the story.

The book launches this Sunday, October 9th. As I mentioned previously, if you pre-order the Kindle version, you can get it at a special discount. The price will return to normal once it goes live, so this is your chance to get a great deal.

And look for my regular, monthly Cool Stuff post on Sunday as well.

Happy reading, everyone.

The sale for the print version of The Soldier and the Slave will run from October 9 through October 23, 2016.

The Traitor and the Thief

I’m working hard on The Traitor and the Thief every moment I can get. Things are going great with this book—it’s flowing very smoothly and I’m very happy with the results so far.

The Traitor and the Thief continues the story begun in The Soldier and the Slave, and also brings back a character familiar to those who read The Witch’s Path. Yes, Phana will play a big role in the second novel of the Undying Empire: Rebellion trilogy. Many people have been asking me about her, wanting to know more about her past and her “abilities” that she used in The Witch’s Path. Her story in The Traitor and the Thief will not disappoint on that score.

The Revenant and the Reaper

Not much to report here. I do know how the entire trilogy is going to play out, of course, so I’ll be able to jump right into this novel as soon as the manuscript for The Traitor and the Thief is complete and goes into editing.

Short Stories

I decided to go with a bit more action in this month’s story, called Exigent. I’m having a lot of fun doing these short stories, which allow me to play with various genres other than sword & sorcery. Exigent could be called a combination of sci-fi and alternate history. Look for it next Sunday.

Tales of the Undying Empire

For those who haven’t yet jumped into the standalone novels in the Tales of the Undying Empire series, I’ve got exciting news. I’m putting together an omnibus edition of all three books, which will be available as both an ebook and a print book.

The print book will be a 6” x 9” trade paperback size and will contain the first three novels in the series, The Tower of Dust, The Severed Oath, and The Witch’s Path.

The omnibus will be called Tales of the Undying Empire, Volume 1. I’m working toward a release date of November 1st, so it’ll be a great Christmas gift for the sword & sorcery fan in your life.

Note that I’m referring to this omnibus as Volume 1, as I fully intend for there to be a second volume. As mentioned in last month’s update, I will be jumping into a new novel in the Tales of the Undying Empire series immediately after I complete The Revenant and the Reaper.

Writing Update – August

The Soldier and the Slave

For various reasons related to setting everything up on the back end, the dates in my last writing update turned out to be off by a week. Here are the corrected dates:

  • Today (Sunday, August 21): The Goodreads Giveaway is live! Five lucky people will receive a free copy of The Soldier and the Slave. The Giveaway runs until September 25th.

  • Pre-orders for The Soldier and the Slave are also now live on Amazon. The pre-order price includes a 25% discount off the regular price. The pre-order runs right up until the book is launched.
  • Sunday, October 9: The book goes live, in both print and ebook on Amazon. Anyone who pre-ordered the book will receive it automatically on this date. The pre-order price will no longer be available.

The Traitor and the Thief

Progress continues on the second book in the Undying Empire: Rebellion series. Since the last update, however, I haven’t managed quite as much writing time as I would have liked. Unfortunately, that’s the nature of not being able to do this full-time. At this point, I believe I’m still on track to complete the first draft well before the end of the year.

The Revenant and the Reaper

I’ve been focusing on The Traitor and the Thief, of course. I continue to make notes here and there as I write book 2.

Short Stories

The short story for this month is called Pages. Like Echoes from last month, it’s a bit of an experiment. I got some great feedback on Echoes and I’m looking forward to some of the short stories I’ve got planned.

Tales of the Undying Empire

I do intend to return to this series of standalone stories set in the Undying Empire. I already have a fourth book planned, and in fact it is completely plotted out and the first chapter is already written. So once The Revenant and the Reaper is finished, I’ll be diving right into this book. I don’t have a name for it yet, but the story involves the return of Flasek Lumayth and Jeyrra, a couple of popular characters from The Severed Oath.

Thanks for continuing to read. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments.

Painting a book cover step-by-step

The cover for The Soldier and the Slave is well underway, and artist Storn A. Cook has been blogging about the process, along with posting shots of the cover painting as he develops it.

I’m really excited about this cover. He’s doing a great job and I can’t wait to see the finished piece. In the meantime, I’m putting finishing touches on the manuscript in preparation for the upcoming launch.

Once the cover is done, I’ll be putting up the option to pre-order the book on all major online book retailers that provide such an option.

So take a look at the painting process, and then come back here for more updates.
