By the time one of my books is released, I’ve already started working on my next project. And I’m looking to expand my list of early readers of each book.
At this point, I’m looking for about 8-10 beta readers for the next book, and will continue that practice for all novels going forward. Here’s how it will work:
Each book will undergo one editing pass, and then go out to my first readers for their reactions. When they provide their feedback, a second editing pass will be done and then the book will go out to the beta readers.
So what does the beta reading phase entail?
Each beta reader will receive an electronic version of the manuscript for the book in his or her preferred format (pdf, epub, mobi, etc.). The beta readers will read the manuscript and provide feedback on the book. The feedback will be reviewed by me and incorporated into the final manuscript before the final editing pass and production.
What kind of feedback am I looking for?
Mostly, I want your overall impression of the book, and for you to point out areas where you think the book just doesn’t work (or works really well). Is there some point at which you feel yourself losing interest? Does a character do something that just seems to go against who they are? Is a particular scene hard to follow? Conversely, is there a scene you feel had a perfect level of tension, or a particular character that you found yourself connected to?
I’m not looking for proofreaders (though if you do find a typo somewhere, I’d be very thankful for you pointing it out to me). But I really want to know how you felt about the story, the characters, and the world around them.
Please note that just because a suggestion is made by one or more beta readers, I do not guarantee that I will agree and that it will be changed in the final book. However, I will take any and all suggestions under consideration on how it will improve the book.
When the book is published, each beta reader will receive a copy of the final ebook, and a signed paperback copy as well if he or she wants one. The names of the beta readers will be listed on the book’s acknowledgements page (though each reader will decide if he or she wants his or her name to appear in the book).
I ask that the beta readers take no more than 60 days to read to the manuscript and provide feedback.
So how do you become a beta reader?
First, send me an email with “Beta Reader” in the subject line. Make sure you include the following information in your email:
- Your full name
- The email address you wish me to use to communicate with you
- A short note telling me about the kinds of books and movies you like to read/watch, and why you’d like to be a beta reader.
Please note that you must agree to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before I will send you any materials. The NDA will be sent by email. Print it out, sign it, and scan it back in and email it back to me.
Due to the requirements of the NDA, and the age-appropriateness of the materials I may send you, I ask that only readers of age 18+ submit a request to be a beta reader.
Thank you in advance to everyone who submits an email.
